Hi Nioko,
Do not get rid of that desk. It sounds to me like your Grandmother gave you the desk with love and you will always remember her through the desk. Just carefully store it away because I promise there will come a time in your later life sometime you will want that desk!! Who knows, maybe you will give it to your granddaughter!

If the desk is truly an heirloom; the first place I'd be asking would be MOM.
Obviously your decision is about a THING; and should cause no RIFT. Your reasons are valid; but perhaps your mother would just store it away somewhere.
Certainly you have multiple options; IE: refinish it; donate it; sell it; trash it; store it; etc.
While I understand "Emotional attachments" to THINGS; not all of us have that condition; fortunately.

Can you not store the old desk somewhere? You may want it in the future because it is a family heirloom and you could regret tossing it.

as another one said, just store it away, because in 10 years or more, you may have a different outlook on lots of things, and the desk might fit right in.

Aww! I can sympathize, Nioko: I hate getting rid of things that my family gave me too.

You could repaint it, or strip the paint off and stain it. Or if you *must* get rid of it, you could inquire at several charities or sell it on E-bay.

Good luck!
