Well yes, somewhat. It's a business. It's no different then negotiations in other unions. I think the issue of why they are going on strike is relevant. They want a higher percentage of the revenue from DVD sales, and internet downloads.etc etc etc.
To some extent i think they have a valid reason to ask for this, but then again, if you break down the royalties giving a portion to each person who had a hand in production, the percentage of individual profit gained from the sales will not be that much. Then again, as far as it concerns films/movies... most times they mass market the 'product' to not only limited to DVDs, but 5 kinds of DVD, regular, directors cut; double disc with bonus features etc; and there's T-shirts, and Posters, [and toys in some cases] and even those obnoxious bobble-heads sometimes LOL. [ i mean there is a crapload of unnecessary products that are a given for the sale of any film/show, and it is all to make money, not necessarily to effectively market the product]. So in that respect, yes, the [AMPTP] can afford to throw some additional profits in the direction of the writers. But, then again, hypothetically to divide revenue between [lets guestimate a figure] 100-200 people [per film/show etc] doesn't leave a whole lot gained as per profit in the end. If you break down a dollar, between 10 people, [assuming the percetnages are equal, ] then each person gains a 10 cent profit. That isn't much. IDK, there's millions and millions in revenue from the sale of these things, consistently; So, in that respect i do think the writers have a vaild argument; and are at least entitled to a small percentage of the revenue.
Although, from the producers side, [somewhat] the point is, what's next? Royalties for gaffers and best boys? But I can see the argument of both sides of this debate, and IDK i do think that the writers should have a little more leverage, and are entitled to a percentage of revenue, [well, a bit larger piece of the percentage according to their asking] since, after all they are the one's coming up with the ideas, you know?

As a writer and a consumer of writing products (via TV, etc.), yeah, I care.

First to lose will be daily talk shows. Leno, Letterman, Stewart, O'Brien, all in reruns or replaced. Next, reality TV, which I don't care about. Next, series TV. Last, movies. I expect any strike will be resolved before movies are affected, since they're usually a couple of years in the pipeline, and probably before series TV, which usually has at least a half-season already written.

However, reality TV is a big money-maker and the networks are going to be hurting badly when they can't put new episodes out there.

It is not important as far as everyday life goes, but it will greatly affect what we see on TV. I remember the last writers strike, about twenty years ago, a lot of good shows bit the dust at that time because it takes a quality program more time to get up and running again than it does mediocre fare. Looks like we are in for even more "reality programming."

Nope, everyone this is a good opportunity. Seize the day! Screw the tube, let's all get out and experience some real reality, find a new hobby, get a second job, start a new religion, herd cats, do something that the world will thank you for tomorrow.

Not really. Hollywood could fall into the ocean and I don't think I'd feel all that bad.
