I'll keep my answer as simple as possible.

1. Write your manuscript in Microsoft Word single-line format, using chapters or sections to distinguish between key topics.

2. Edit the manuscript many times until you are satisfied with the spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Remember to cut and trim away all unnecessary verbiage and repetitious phrases.

3. Double-space your manuscript and format paging as follows:
Your name/TITLE of story
At the far upper-right corner insert page number, but do so by using the "Format" button on the toolbar.

I recommend strongly that you acquire the writer's handbook, "The Elements of Style," by Strunk and White. It is used by novice and published writers.

Also, consult the Writer's Market guide that is found in your library or book store before submitting your manuscript.

Gaining acceptance and representation of your manuscript is nearly impossible as an unknown author, but stay persistent and exercise patience when you begin receiving the rejects.

Good luck.

First thing you do is write your book. Take your time to edit your writing very carefully. Then research the market and other authors of the same genre. If you chose to go the traditional route of publishing, you'll need to find an agent and that will lead to more research for those agents of interest to you. Or if you decide to go the self-publish route you will have to do your homework in that area as well. This is very brief I know, but good luck.
