If you're from the EU you can work in France no problem.. and, from my experience living here, they're pretty lax with forms and stuff... you should declare yourself but for two weeks only? Hmm, I'd just take cash in hand.... If you end up staying longer then of course you'd need to declare yourself (so you get medical cover etc) but for 2 weeks just take holiday insurance you you'll be fine. If anyone asks, you're doing it for a friend.

If you're British then you have full rights to work. You will need to go to the Prefecture to get a carte de sejour though. Your monthly wage bill should have tax deducted at source.

I hope that your painting a chateau goes well and that it leads to other work. France has loads of chateaux.

If it is a British Client, do the job for cash and come home and forget about the tax.

By the time anyone finds out you will be long gone there's no reason why friends can't help each other or give each other presents so why bother with the formalities.
