Well, my definition of a pet is something that responds back to your affection, so to me fish don't even qualify as pets (though some people swear that they have a bond with their fish - it's only the food and curiosity thing people!).
But when I was a kid, I had an ant farm/display, and also grew those amoeba in the petri dish. Of course they both responded to certain stimuli, but not in the way that a pet does. And then there's the infamous flea circus, but I think they only respond to the thirst for blood (food) also!

Talking "domestic" based animals... the two you are going to have the most smarts with are believe it or not, pigs and rats. Out of all the animals in the world, including humans, pigs rank in the top five of "smarts".
Further down the list you are going to find some species of parrots as well as dogs and cats.
But rats rank way up there and pigs blow the rest out of the water.
