We have not long lived in our current house but we have noticed the floor in out living room has been risen at some point by about 15cm, and we are the only house on the street that has this.

We slid a knife under the step and it just kept going, so it seems hollow.

There is no record of this in any of our info or anything and the house was build about 15 yrs ago.

The house has no central heating, only storage heaters, so don't think there'd be any piping.

Anybody know of any logical reasons that it would have been risen as we haven't got any way of cheking and we are oh so curious?

Thanks

We're wondering if there could be a body under there as there seems no logical explaination! You can really obviously tell that its been risen since the front door was put in as the door frame is too low.

We can't get the floor boards up without making a helluva mess! so just looking for ideas.. but sure we'll probably resort to that at some point as we are so curious!!

You could try lifting a floor board and having a look.

Since you don't strictly state the method and material of construction; IE: Crawl space/ Slab/ basement/// Wood frame/ block/ etc.; answers here may seem nearly as vague as the Q. (no offense)

Steps? Is this noticed at an entry/exit point? At an interior stair? Is the floor popping up; or is the house settling beneath the flooring? Have you exterior access to the first level construction?

Is this rise perceived to be warping at the point? OR is the entire floor NOT LEVEL to that point of the rise? Do the floor boards seem loose; or do they squeak to walk on?

The fact that the house has no heating may be totally irrelevant.

I think it would help you to determine answers to some of the questions I pose; and certainly would help anyone give you a more accurate answer.

Hi Bex

we had a similar problem on a new build, It turned out to be the floor level was wrong at the point of construction. We had a level floor at the back door and 20mm drop at the front door. Don't worry about it enjoy your house.

Is the house on a sloping site so the front of the floor may be higher than the back...just a thought....or there is a body under there.

Could be that the previous owners were really short and couldn't see out of the windows.

You should get in touch with the surveyor who looked your house over for you before you bought it. If there's a problem that he didn't notice or failed to report to you, then you could be in for compensation if there turns out to be something wrong.

A friend of mine is a surveyor and he failed to realise that a house had a cellar - the sellers had covered over the doorway which was under the stairs. It turned out that the cellar was flooded, which was leading to rising damp. His firm had to pay out thousands in compensation.

IT COULD BE FOR A D.P.M OR JUST FOR INSULATION, ABOVE A CONCRETE / STONE FLOOR.
