you can use commutative property _ + 9 = 6


but you cant answer -3

may Prof ask dis to us..

maybe any other formula can works but i really dont get it!

I'm answering -3 anyway, cuz it's the right answer :-p

Having said that, if you really wanna impress your teacher, you could read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_arithmetic (which is probably quite a bit higher-level maths than he's asking you about - it might all seem very complicated!). If you specified for example that you were working in mod 10, then:
9+7=6 (mod 10), for example.

Basically the "mod 10" in brackets means that you're working in a number system where you can take away or add on multiples of 10, so in that system, 6=16=26 etc.

But yeah, I'm sure that's not what he meant!
