Why do you continue to do something although you know it kills you?

For example:
You know that smoking is bad, but you don't give up smoking

I tried smoking when I was 14 and hated it, but I'm glad I never carried on as my mum (smoked for 51 years) has got COPD and emphysema. She is really suffering.
I, unfortunately, was prescribed 30mg codeine, 8 daily, 11 years ago and I've been dependent on it since even though it's causing hellish problems. I know I should cut it out but I'm scared do do it, I'm thoroughly ashamed of myself.

I don't smoke, but there are other bad thing that can be done. I guess you don't realize the total implications of what could happen or don't want to know and/ or posses an attitude "Awwwww, that won't happen to me!" Which is self applied ignorance and lying to one's self. Neither are good.

Because you either legitimately WANT to do it, or because you are an addict and don't have the willpower to kick the habit.

i.e. my friend smokes because he knows it's bad for him. It's the same to him as cutting oneself. It releases tension, anger and the unbridled fury, and it's also a social activity.

Pining away over the death of a loved one does indeed feel as if it may kill me. But I can never ever stop thinking about them.

A lot of that is physical and you need a regular MD to precribe something new to help you. There's a drug now that will help you.
