Probably the recent German film 'The Lives of Others' by Florian Henckel von Donnersmark. Don't let his name put you off since it is superb. About suppression of people's freedom in East Germany under Communism. It is beautiful.
After that you have the usual suspects, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind, Les Enfants du paradis, Alexanderplatz by Wenders, Metropolis etc.
