The pap smear is a test to screen for cervical cancer and that is done once a year when a woman has her annual pelvic exam.

To check for a vaginal infection the doctor will take a sample of the vaginal discharge and have it cultured by a lab to see what kind of infection it is. Sometimes depending on the infection they can tell by just looking at the discharge, but the reason for the culture that is done by a lab is to see what kind of infection it is. The results come back in about a week.

A pelvic exam. He'll look at your vagina and then he'll do a pap smear on you.
