Loam describes a soil texture made up of sand, silt & clay. Depending upon the parent material that these basic soil building elements came from, the soil building processes, the age of the soil and the area you live in a particular loam soil may be acidic, neutral or alkyline.

The first answer is a very good one. I can say that most plants will prefer a slightly acidic to neutral environment to grow in. Not a lot of plants do well in alkaline conditions.

If you are trying to find out about the acidity of your soil-no matter what type it is, you can get inexpensive soil test kits at your local garden nursery, nursery catalog, or online. They will give you the pH value of your soil.
