Make sure you do not have a disk in the CD drive or perhaps the floppy drive.

Give more clues to your problem.

Forget all the other answers young fella, you're talkin' to your senior now. ;-) I'm 62.

I wish you had told us what ya got, like how old is the comp, etc.

It could be a lot of things, your question is like you asking a mechanic how much it would cost to fix your car when he ain't seen it yet.

Ah'm a thinkin' that ya got a fairly old comp too, so:
Use another comp with the same OS (Operating System) as what you have. Create a boot disk by follerin' these here instruktions er intructions:

1. Go to the command screen (DOS) and type, without the quotation marks "SYS A:" (where A: is the drive where the floppy diskette (3-1/2") is inserted), could be B: and don't forget the colon.

2. Put diskette in the busted comp, turn on comp.

3. If'n that donna work, you may have to do a BIOS setup routine to make the comp boot up from the floppy diskette.

4. Mebba yer power supply is busted.

5. Mebba your HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is busted.

6. Mebba the MOBO is busted, you know, the CPU.

7. Mebba I'm busted.

8. Mebba the world is busted, and we don't know it.
;-)

I'm 60, as well. Hang in there!!!

I wish you had given us the Make and Model of your PC, it 's possible that your hard drive is defective. Ask a computer literate, younger family member to help you determine the problem, FIRST. My kids were amazing! If the hard drive is NOT OK, replace it. Then:

Without the PC's original Windows system disk(s), you have very few options:

If you bought the PC used, ask the former owner for the disks. If unavailable, you may have no choice but to buy Windows disks. But, make sure your PC can run XP, the minimum hardware requirements are listed on Microsoft's website.

If the PC is new, call your supplier.

TIP: Stay away from Windows Vista, if not originally installed !!!

The fact that you are new to computers opens up another "used computer" option. Ubuntu Linux is totally free, from:

http://www.ubuntu.com

And, they will even send you a free CD, including free shipping. It's an excellent alternative to Windows, and surprisingly easy to use!!!

Hope this helps.

Could be a couple of reasons.. most obvious one I can think of is that your bios settings has been changed, I don't think you know what bios might be so I'll just go ahead and tell you what you need to do...

1: reboot your PC
2: keep pressing "Del" button at your PC start up, it'll take you to bios
3: there look for a tab such as "boot options" or something similar
4: in there you should be able to see something like 1st or 2ND or 3rd boot device priority or something similar
5: your 1st device should be your hard drive, in this case I'm not sure what you're using so I can't really tell but it should be something like xxx(some numbers)xxx, if it's not set as 1st device, then change it.
6: not a necessary step but you can put your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM device as 2ND boot device.
7:go to exit tab select "exit and save settings", it'll reboot automatically

If that didn't help it could be either your windows boot files that are not working properly in that case you would have to reinstall windows again.

I remember after changing a couple of hardware my windows wouldn't boot so I had to use the windows CD every time as a boot disk.

Ok I’ve herd most people talking about bios but we need to know what’s happening when you switch on? Dose it power up? How many screens do you see? Are the all black with white writing?

If you don’t see windows starting but all the black boot screens pass as normal then it’s most likely a software or bios problem that is solved putting a OS Windows disc or Linux disc into your computer and follow the instruction . You may need to change the bios.

there are a other versions but the installation possess is similar

If it is a hardware problem then it could be anything and without more info I can’t really make an accurate assessment.

More likely it's the computer's age. Make sure there are no disks in the drives.

O.K. we check ALL cables ! next turn on comp. you hear fan or hard drive turning ? if not prob. power supply is stuffed. power is alright, nothing on screen, borrow another monitor, try that. if it works, your monitor is 'gone'. i won't go into re-setting cmos [ bit complex ], so if you dont have an o.s. disk [ windows xp ? ], then borrow one ! and pop it in your cd/ dvd drive and follow 'boot from c.d. instructions' Good luck !
