To empathise with someone is to be sympathetic towards them because you have personal experience of what they are going through.

Empathy is different to sympathy in that sympathy is simply feeling sorry for someone and empathy means you actually relate to them.

If you want the dictionary definition it's an "identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives" but that's kind of a simplistic explanation.

You can empathise with someone - understand and be able to explain their motives and feelings - without feeling any sympathy for them. It's how counselors and social workers are able to work with offenders like murderers and child-molesters and is an invaluable emotion if you can manage to find it within yourself.
