eg. a PC with 1 DDR RAM chip and 1 DDR 2 RAM chip

Sometimes there are motherboards that support two different memory technologies so if you can find that supports DDR and DDR2 then you could use one but it probably wouldn't be such a good deal (you'd be better off just buying a new RAM module and getting a DDR2 only motherboard).

It also depends on chipset support and newer chipsets will often lose support for the older RAM standards (so a P35 motherboard is unlikely to have DDR slots, though it may have either DDR2 or DDR3 slots).

AMD processors have on board memory controllers and right now they either have DDR or DDR2 controllers depending on socket, Intel processors have the memory controller in the chipset but even then you'll have a hard time finding a motherboard that can handle two types of RAM at once.

DDR2 and DDR have different slots, they look very close, but any attempt to fit a DDR2 into a DDR slot or vice cersa is likely to break the board or card, or both. Machines support either one or the other, not both.

You'll probably not want to take computer component and so blithely carry them around. (Watch it not work when you put it back in). Unless you have a anti-static bag around. And even then, you should learn what goes into selecting RAM. You're better off taking some systems inspection tool like Sisoft Sandra (I just named one off my head), and looking up the specs on the RAM and your motherboard. You should Google for information you need when purchasing RAM. Typically this includes knowing whether it's plain SDRAM, DDR, DDR-2, etc., existing RAM speeds, what your motherboard supports, whether it is EEC or not, and so on.

Not ddr and ddr2 never that way! but you can put two speeds of ddr together like I did, 512mb 333mhz and 256mb 266mhz. My puter saw them as 768 mb ram but it ran as 768mb running at 266mhz. Your puter will always go with the lowest speed.

Hey guys!

DDR2 is backward compatable with DDR, as long as the DDR is in the first slot, you are ok. The board has to be for DDR, if it is for DDR2, you can't do it.

No. Either or. Here's an interesting board.

It has slots for both DDR2 and DDR3 ram but even with this board you either run DDR2 in the DDR2 slots or DDR3 in the DDR3 slots --you can't mix them and run both DDR2 and DDR3 at the same time.

One of them will not fit because the keyway will be in a different position (very slight difference.) Also they are different technology.
