There are trees that live hundreds of years and then there are trees that have a much smaller life span. Those that die off relatively soon should be harvested before they die and are useless.

The ugliest place in the woods I have ever seen was an old-growth forest of Douglas Fir. Nothing could grow underneath the canopy thus there was no food for animals. There were dead limbs and old downed trees. It was a place where no one would go a second time.

One cannot judge all forests by one set of rules. The redwoods and sequoia are nothing like the forests of fir or spruce or cedar or the hardwoods. Each must be managed by the characteristics of the trees growing there.

There really isn't much forest that can be called old growth. I think we should let it grow an harvest the middle growth.
