Is there software available that lets you know what's going on in the background?

It could be a lot of different things.

If you use a peer to peer file sharing system then you should expect it to access your hard disk while your online.

Otherwise it might be a sign that your computer is infected with something.

If the hard disk activity is intermittent then it's probably just normal background activity that pretty much all computers though but if it's thrashing the drive a bit (and grinding away for a long time) then it probably is something to be concerned about. Check your modem lights (and Ethernet ACT light on the back if you use Ethernet to connect to your modem) to see if any data is passing out of or into your machine.

Not having enough memory causes the hard drive to page the disk. Well anyway if you have enough ram you can download some utilities on line like PC Doctor or seagate/WD diagnostics. SMART test
