From 1920-1935 he was a regular player, and only won the award once in 1923 when he set the season mark for homers, only to break it again in 1927. He led the league in OPS 9 times B.A. once, homers 8 times, RBI 6 times, and runs 5 times. Serious baseball fans should know this

Players weren't allowed to win more than once.

" in the most blatantly stupid idea of the whole history of the award, once a player won the award he was ruled ineligible forever more, meaning that players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were only eligible to win the award once (in fact, in what must be regarded as the Babe’s 2nd best season of 1927, when he hit his record 60 HR, as well as batting .356, with 160 RBI and 158 runs scored he was ineligible because he had won the award in 1923)."

He never won one at all as there was no MVP award until years later. Early on the Chambers award was the only one that recognized the best player. If there had been one, Babe would have surely won at leat 5 times or more. Babe did win the Chambers award in 1923 but players were only allowed to win once for some reason unknown to me so that was his only one.

Babe Ruth won numerous "Player of the Year" type awards, but the MVP as we know it was not created until 1931, when Ruth was nearing the end of his career.

There has never been a rule about players not being allowed to win the MVP more than once. Jimmie Foxx won back-to-back in 1932 and 1933 with the Philadelphia Athletics, then again in 1938 with the Boston Red Sox.

well thats an easy one, their were always multiple guys, even on his own team that were just as deserving
and again, i point out, the mvp doesnt mean you put up the biggest numbers, it means would your team have been successful without you in the lineup
obviously you could have taken ruth out of that murderers row yankee lineups and they still would have killed people
there were also a lot of other future hof's that played in ruths time, that may have been more important to their teams success than ruth

Good question. Not including the dopers of today, Ruth was and still is the benchmark for greatness.
