The identification of Mercury as a planet, that is, a wandering star, goes back to at least the Sumerians. Understanding of the nature of planets as physically different from stars begins with Galileo, who, among other things, observed that Venus had phases like the Moon (c. 1610). The first person to observe phases of Mercury was Giovanni Zupi, in 1639.
