A totally off grid system would cost you a lot more then you would get back out of it in your life. Off grid systems are just for people who really needs them and are very wasteful. To produce enough power to get you through a week of rainy days you would have to have a system many times larger then you would require if you were grid tied.
A grid tie only system is the most profitable and green system. Any time the sun is up it will be pushing power back into the public utility which will be forceing anyone on the grid to use green power. And being it does not have to charge up a week or two worth of battery power more goes into the grid. So for best case get a solar backup system that can handle 24 hours of power usage with a grid tie inverter so it can be back feeding the grid while you are gone to work during the day time and not using power.
As far as how hard is it to have a solar or wind power home? Easy as calling a solar or wind power dealer. Write a check and in about a month you will be solar powered. If they have a crew that is not doing much you could have it installed the same day and be solar powered the next morning.
And to never pay an electric bill ever again it depends on your power usage. Could be $10,000 or $100,000. Keep in mind that if your electric bill is 100 dollars a month that is 36,000 over 30 years. Or well over 100,000 dollars if you add in inflation, taxes and fees that you will pay from renting from the public utility. Then you don't own nothing for all that money you paid them. You can't sell something you rented.
Here is a price list of home solar power systems in kit form and a link to show you how to size your system.

Wind Mills generate energy when the wind blows.
Solar energy is when the sunshines.
Unless you can harness the solar and Wind Energy for use at Night time.
I would say it very difficult. unless you have a hamster running on a generator at nighttime.
The electric bill will decrease.

i have been to a farm where they use solar panels as a source of electricity. But its limited to only a few devices. The equipment cost about 15,000 to 25,000 installment or cash, respectively. They use for it for their television set and refrigerators as well as motor pumps...its about 16in x 25in...estimate only!...some use reloadable cards, some do not.
The cost of the solar panel compared to electric bills would still depend on your daily consumption and the number of electronic devices you have. If your not that techy and only use t.v, refrigerators, and a small microwave oven...or even a washing machine sparingly...then using a solar panel would be an advantage. If there are panels that has a biger capacity then go for it....

Heck give it another 10 or 20 years and most of us will be getting our power from either wind generators or water generators.I know New York is testing the water type right now in a certain area. It's a pretty neat idea.It seems to be quite similar to the wind generators except that it uses the tidal flow.

there is not any longer a single option gas concept which will supply payback of the preliminary investment interior a decade. In some warmer international locations, like Greece, you notice an invaluable style of photograph voltaic power kit on the roofs, yet it somewhat is by way of the fact the ability grant isn't too great (Lot of Black or Brown outs) and the photograph voltaic stuff is a doable option to a noisy generator. a number of direction use it to warmth the water, notwithstanding it takes all day in the sunlight to get a bathful of water. i'm particular they'll clean up it sometime, yet todays "eco" platforms only make your place appear like a scientists shed.

To make you house completely solar powered..........about $70,000. It is not cost effective in my opinion.
