So I was in a bad car accident a couple of weeks ago and the doctors have me on Valium. I haven't had to take it recently but I really want to now cause I am in tons of pain, can't sleep and having awful muscle spasms. The problem is about 7 hours ago I had 2 glasses of wine, and another glass about 1 hour ago. I don't feel any effects from the wine at all but I have heard you can't take Valium with alcohol. Any chance I would be able to take 1, 5 mg Valium? Or is it too risky???

Thanks~

Generally; all drs and pharmacists advise their patients not to mix alcohol with any meds.

The literature states to avoid alcohol while taking Valium (diazepam). Because, alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by Valium (diazepam) and other drugs . Alcohol may also increase the risk of having a seizure if Valium (diazepam) is being taken for a seizure condition.

If after 3 glasses of wine; you don't feel libated at all; then your body's alcohol tolerance might be high. And if you're not planning to drive; you can take the Valium It's a strong muscle relaxant .

Valium (diazepam) is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. Even though; Valium is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and muscle spasms. These are some of the side effects of Valium. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause further anxiety, seizures, and muscle spasms and no relief of your pain.

In other words, your muscle spasms might become more aggravated.instead of relieved. You may split the 5 mgm tab into two so you would take a lesser dose of only 2.5 mgm.

Valium is a benzodiazepine with properties of being a sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, amnestic and muscle relaxant drug.

Intoxication

Overdosage of valium, particularly when combined with alcohol, may lead to coma, or respiratory arrest. The antidote for all benzodiazepines is flumazenil, a benzodiazepine antagonist, which is occasionally used empirically in patients presenting with unexplained loss of consciousness in an emergency room setting. As with all overdose situations, the physician must be aware of the possibility that other/multiple substances were ingested by the patient.

Alcohol can exacerbate the effect of the valium and vice versa; that's why they usually tell you not to mix them.

Also if all you're taking is 1.5mg, that is a tiny amount of valium anyway, or it is compared to the amount I can take and still be standing upright, lol.

Actually until I read your post, I didn't even know you could get 1.5mg tablets of diazepam - the lowest dose of valium tablets we've got in our medical chest is 5mg.

alcohol and valium have the same effects on your nervous system... they both slow it down. you may not physically feel the effects of the alcohol but that doesnt mean it isnt effecting your body. however, wine isnt that high in alcohol content and the two glasses from 7 hours ago should almost be gone from your body. chances are you'd be fine taking the valium but the effects could last longer than normal or be a little stronger.
