An omen of what? If its truly a true story forget typing on the computer and go comfort your niece who feels horrible that a bird died because of her head. She was just in the wrong spot and the right time. Go pick some flowers and offer to do a "burial" with her to make her feel better.

I've heard the superstition about the bird flying into the window and have had several birds fly into my windows and die because they are floor to ceiling windows and hard to extinguish. No death so far.
But the red bird was either sick (and just in case you should take the bird to a vet or the SPCA to have it checked out for diseases), it was old and it's flying skills were off, or it was just the birds time to go.
You should pamper up your neice and explain to her that all things eventually meet their end. If the bird isn't sick I think a proper burial would be appropriate. It would wonderful for the bird and would probably help relieve some of the anxiety and trauma your neice is feeling.
Good Luck!!! Very interesting story!!

Nah, its just the time for the bird to 'go'!!

It will take time for your niece to forget it... help her out from it.
