In a perfect world, doctors recommend waiting 4 to 6 weeks after a vaginal delivery before resuming intercourse. This is to allow the cervix to return to its normal state and prevent infection. There are of course many other ways of "making love" with your partner during that time.
The standard 6 weeks can be longer if the woman is not ready "physically"; and that could be for a myriad of reasons, including tiredness, and residual soreness of the the vagina.
Some women's vaginas are not as tight as they were beforehand, but pelvic floor exercises can greatly assist both before and after birth. Occasionally, "tightness" can only be restored by surgical means, and that would have to be discussed with your doctor further down the track.
I was one of the unfortunate ones in that it was 6 very long months before sex was not painful.

I tore real bad and had stitches so I had to wait 8 weeks and I was just as tight as before. I waited longer because I was afraid of hurting.

well... hate to tell you its never the same for him but it is better for you because he just might last longer.unless you have the husband stitch or Cesarean then it may be even tighter.and you are forbidden to have any fun until you six week check up doctors orders even with a Cesarean.Good luck and your hubby wont mind a bit after waiting 6 weeks lol. and he would never tell you,its a very touchy matter

I think they usually say 4-6 weeks. I can't remember now. it's been a little while.
On my end, things were very different..way too roomy...but it did tighten up. I had a few stitches so it was a little sore at first too.
