It has already been studied concerning abolishing the penny. won't work presently. Even though it costs more than a penny to make a penny, It would cost the average state 54 million dollars in lost revenue per year and the Federal Government 280 Million a year by abolishing them. All the usage taxes are calculated (along with the income taxes) to the penny. It is only on yearly tax forms that rounding off is done.

A regular small business would lose hundreds to thousands a year in just the odd pennies. If something costs 99 cents, the extra 4 cents per item per person per day would accumulate to quite a bit per year. Why not just charge $1..? Add taxes and you have 1.06 or 1.07 depending on the state.

We would have to reorganize the total money system just to get rid of pennies.

I once read somewhere that it actually costs more than 1 cent to mint a penny. And, they are not pure copper, but copper clad steel.

It has been proposed to eliminate the penny, but with no success. You'd put the people at the mint out of work. Then there's the copper lobby. Hmm, a lobby made out of copper, cool eh. And, just plain politics.

The nickle is all we need.

wow I didn't realise they still had pennies there...

the smallest denomination they have in Oz is 5c and in NZ it is now 10c. I guess it is easier to change for a smaller country though.

I think it would cost alot more money to melt them down than they are worth so it would be better to use them for something that didn't require alot of energy.

Maybe we could sew them together and have really cool clothing or something... :P

A) Defacing government issued currency is a crime. Not that it's enforced.
B) If value is somehow pumped back into the dollar, those pennies are going to be able to buy a whole lot more than they do now!

Stay hopeful for the future of the penny. Or, stockpile a boatload of them and buy some euros.

DUTCHESS i got a better idea.....why dont we all put our pennies in a swiming pool and go swimming in it like Scrooge McDuck from Duck Tails!!!!!!!!!!

they say happiness cures all so if we let poor people swim in the coin pool they may cheer up and get self motivation again!

Great idea! Let's also ask all the people thinking about getting married not to get any rings, men not to get belts, women not to use any earings, necklace, writslace, etc. You can be the first one!

Well, I use my pennies. I save them all up and roll them in coin rolls. (Along with other spare change).

I think I got about 10 bucks in pennies saved up right now. Once my safe is full of coin rolls, it'll all be put in savings.

: )

I save all my pennies for my little grandkids. To them they think its a small fortune to have hundreds of pennies.
