m = (0 + 1) / (- 5 - 3)
m = - 1 / 8
y - 0 = (-1/8) (x + 5)
y = (-1/8)x - 5/8

Y = Mx + b where M is the slope and b is the y-intercept
1) Find Slope - Change in Y / Change in X
Y goes from 0 to -1 or 1, X goes from -5 to 3 or -8 so slope is
-1/8
2) We now know Y = -1/8x +b plug in one of your points to solve for b (0) = -1/8(-5) + b
b = -5/8
our equation is now Y = -1/8x -5/8 or multiply by 8 to make it look better: 8Y = -X - 5

Both points work it you substitute!

general equation: y=mx+c
gradient ( m ) = (-1 - 0)/(3 - - 5) = -1/8
y intercept ( c ) :
let y= -1 x= 3
-1 = (-1/8)(3) + c
c = -5/8

therefore equation of line : y= -1/8x - 5/8

y= mx + b

m = 0 + 1 / -5 - 3 = -1/8

y = mx + b .... (3,-1)

-1 = (-1/8) (3) + b
b= -5/8

y = mx + b

y = -1/8x - 5/8
