It refers to a person having to make a decision about a choice in the direction their life will take. Like if you come to a "fork in the road" in your life, One road leads to-will I try drugs, or cigarettes, or any number of bad things. The other leads to good things, You must decide which way to go. In making such a choice you have to consider all of the consequences that each road will lead you to.
Hope this helps

Stick a fork in it. "I've finished talking," "That's all I have to say about that." It's also used to indicate a losing cause. (When you cook meat, and it's "done," you stick a fork in it.) When a sports team, for example, is losing, and then losing badly so defeat seems inevitable, a commentator might say "stick a fork in them." Stick a sock in it or Put a sock in it. If you tell someone to put a sock in it then you are telling them to be quiet. The Sock in this instance was originally a real sock. In the early days of sound reproduction and radio broadcasts the ability to control the volume of sound coming out of the instruments was almost non-existent; sound came out of large uncontrollable horns. However, if a sock was stuffed into the mouth of the horn, then the volume was considerably reduced, hence the saying.

You can go either one way or the other. A fork in the road means a split where it bears to the left or right. It means you have to make a decision about something, and choose a route to go down.

the literal sense is a road that divides and branches off into 2 seperate roads and you have to choose to follow either the road to the right or road to the left. The Poetic sense is having to make a decision about something or choosing which path you're going to take in life (date Bobby or Michael; become a doctor or an author; try drugs,cigarettes,alcohol/have sex or choose not to) and where the decision/chosen path leads you ( graduating Law school or ending up in jail) . The option or path you don't choose is "the road not taken"

Stick a fork in it is a reference to cooking. When you want to get the cooked meat off the grill, you "stick a fork in it, because it is done." This is referenced here when you say stick a fork in it. For example: After a long baseball game in 90 degree weather you might say....."Stick a fork in me, I'm done with this game." Or after a long night of studying "Stick a fork in it, I can't learn anymore." Many people are saying it means to be quiet. This may be what it means to kids now a days, but when I was younger we used the phrases "Stick a sock in it" or "Stick a cork in it" when we wanted someone to shut up.
