I was just wondering if people (T.V., Newspapers, etc.) made a big deal of his death?

I'm hoping they did! And I definately can't remember because I was about three years old at that time :(

I can't stop thinking that his death might have not been of much imporatance. If something as lame as Paris Hilton's jail sentence got more attention than Freddie's death, i will be shocked. Please say it ain't so

I just recently discovered/fell in love with QUeen's music, and I don't know much about Freddie or the band

If anyone remembers anything that happened/was done in the media due to Freddie's death (huge ceremony?, his death being mentioned a lot in the news?), I'D LOVE TO GET SOME DETAILS, THOUGHTS, COMMENTS, INTERNET LINKS, ANYTHING

THanks!!!

For such a star the media attention was very small in comparison, when he died
They villified him as alledgedly he was having sex with under aged boys abroad.
He didnt go out in a blaze of publicity - we died quietly in bed at his home in london with his long time female friend.
Dont think people knew he had aids until he was either nearly dead or after -as he kept it quiet.

As a musician and entertainer he was a genius

Freddie's death was a big deal to those who cared here in the US. I was devastated. I remember there were several memorial services for him on TV. You have to remember that QUEEN stopped touring in the US in the early 80's. Their popularity here plummeted after the video "I Want To Break Free" and MTV virtually stopped playing QUEEN overnight. Freddie's death certainly didn't have the impact that John Lennon's death did. It really wasn't until the tribute concert that the US realized the huge lose of his passing. His popularity has continued to grow since then. I guess people are trying to catch up on what they missed while he was alive. I attended the official QUEEN convention here in the US last year and the QUEEN fans were more interested in QUEEN and PR than celebrating Freddie's 60th birthday. A small number of us had our own celebration with a hat party and champagne. Jacky, president of the international fan club was there and didn't understand what the hats were for. Makes you wonder where people's heads are.

He died quietly in his house in Kensington, with almost nobody there.
There was definitely at least one person there, but accounts vary on who it was.
He was criticized a lot because he kept his AIDS a secret until the day before he died, but that was out of his wish for privacy.
There was a giant tribute concert for him, that was organized in 10 weeks, where all his heroes and friends and big rock stars sang Freddie's songs and their own, raising money to donate to an AIDS charity.
The remaining members of Queen gave the rights to the song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to an AIDS charity group, and it has made at least $1.5 million from it.
Queen broke up, as they always said they would, if any of the members had to leave.
Roger and Brian still make public appearances sometimes, and still do some music, but John retired silently and nobody has really seen him or heard from him in...I don't even know how long.

He dies two years before I was born, but I am in love with Queen so have read books and every article and stuff I can find on them and the separate members. =]

Well, I was very upset. It was clear for quite a while that he was seriously ill, but I don't think anyone knew how ill. People were still worrying very much about AIDS and it was a bit of an uncomfortable feeling that such an icon was dying of the disease.
Yes, of course it was mentioned in the news. I was even more upset when I asked a friend if she'd heard he'd died and she said: "Oh well, there'll be another one along!". She was much younger than me - I was a teenager during the 70's and she was about ten years younger. She was wrong. There never was another Freddie Mercury.

I'll give this from an American viewpoint. I think it's fair to say Mercury's death wasn't a major story; it didn't cross over to the front page of the paper, for example. Most of the band's hits came some years before his death. His passing did cause a revival of interest in Queen.

To me it doesn't really matters, if it was a "big deal" in the media. IT WAS a big deal for all the people who loved him around out the world & those close to him.
It's not the media that made him important, he was important himself. Freddie didn't like the media much anyway, and tried to keep his life private. As for myself I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard it on the news. The exact moment! I was devostated. He was and still is my hero!!

While his death was only given "passing notice" by the Media when it occurred, Freddie's genius continued to grow & gather attention- LONG afterward. This was helped along by quite a # of Movies & Comediens who featured Queen's music & Freddie's origionality. I think he was alittle ahead of his time... And by the Time WE caught up to HIS talent & Influence- He was gone...

Freddie announced the day before he died that he had Aids. He died with friends at a hospital. He was gay, hence the name of the band, Queen. He was a great song writer and lyricist. He had great voice range. After his death what was left of Queen held a memorial service for Freddie at Wimbley Stadium. Some of the worlds biggest rock stars took turns singing his songs with Queen on stage. The show was broadcast around the world. One of the best songs done was "Someone to Love" sung by George Michael.

He left his entire estate to the only woman who stood by him though life without judging him.

Not really. In music circles it was. In mass culture, it was about as big as Robert Goulet's death last week.
