So I know the Xbox 360, Wii, and Playstation 3 are not old at all but I was wondering how long would yall say its going to be before we hear about the NEXT generation? Do you think there even will be a next generation anytime soon? The Xbox and the Playstation 2 were not around extremely long before we heard about the 360 and the PS3!
Just want to see what yall think!

I was just doing some research and came across a interesting article about the Ps4 on Engadget.com (you can google PS4 and its the first link). It is an article about sonys plans for PS4 and will be released sometime after 2010 ofcourse but its worth reading. Just wanted to add that.

I think it'll be quite some time actually.
If you look at Sony's history, the PSX was released 1994. The PS2 followed in 2000, and the PS3 came out 2006.
So that's an interval of every 6 years.
The Xbox was released in 2001, and the 360 came out in 2005. 4 years, but keep in mind that Microsoft could have been holding back on the Xbox for quite some time before releasing it.
The N64 was out in 1996/7 (depending where you were located) and the Gamecube was released 2001/02. The Wii came out in 2006. Also 4 year intervals.
So... every 4 or so years we can expect to see something new? Right now all the big 3 companies are set on making profits off of what they have out right now. The Wii is doing so well, why would Nintendo want to fix what's not broken? The PS3 is doing quite poorly, so Sony is trying to keep it afloat. Microsoft is doing well with the 360... who knows what they are up to?
But I do remember hearing or reading a rumour of a 'Wii 2' coming out with more powerful hardware. Just a rumour though :P

Sony's 10 year plan means a release would be approx. 2016 but i see it coming earlier then that, maybe an announcemnt in 4-5 years from now. They have the biggest hardware out of the 3 consoles, but 10 years the ps3 will be highly outdated, even if nintendo made unpowered systems for the next 1-2 console cycles.
Xbox will probably be end of next year or end in '09. With built in hd-dvd player, bigger storage, built in hdmi on all versions, and upgraded performance.
Nintendo is an interesting company now. They would have to keep the same controller to offer backwards compatability, so I forsee a smaller announcment about an upgraded Wii coming in 3-4 yeasr. Perhaps offering higher HD support, hard drive, 2-4x amount of ram, cpu, and gpu power.

Sony said that the PS3 will have a 10 year life span and the PS3 will just enter it's first year on Nov. 17th this month. But I think that another new Sony console will come out in about 7 years from now minimum.
As for a new Xbox console, I think that a new Microsoft console may come out before another Sony console. Plus, the PS3 will be able to last longer because of it's more advanced technology, so that won't be a problem if there is a new Xbox before a new Sony console. I think that another new Xbox console may come out in maybe 3 or 4 years from now considering that it's a lot weaker than the PS3 in terms of power. Maybe when the newer Xbox will come with a built in HD-DVD drive and use HD-DVD's for games.
As for a new Nintendo console, I think maybe in another 5 years. I think that Nintendo isn't really trying to keep up with Sony and Microsoft in the video game war. Nintendo is trying to go their own route in the gaming industry and isn't really caught up with being the number one console and having the console with the best technology.

I think Nintendo will have to update the Wii. The control and concept are great, but the graphics are very limited.
I think X360 is probably the best overall system, but the hardware is defective and the fan noise is awful. They will need to make a smaller, quieter X360 - and why not improve the storage, processor and efficiency while they are at it?
The PS3 is a terrible game system. The games suck. Online sucks. The releases of the games are way less than the X360. And Metal Gear keeps getting delayed. Having sold 100 million PS2s, the crappiness of the PS3's Library doesn't make sense to me.
Considering games can hold 30 gigs of data or more, and most games are less than 6 gigs - it shows that there is much more technological capacity than creative mojo. That's why Nintendo is really interesting - they solved the creative side first, and now need to find more CPU and GPU power to keep their lead.

I am sure all of the companies are already building new consoles. We will see one on the market within the next 3 or 4 years I think. It doesn't take long for new technology to become old.

sometime in 6yrs, from ps2 to nxt gen took around that time, ps to ps2 took ages and thats cause tech wasn't so up then and gamers weren't as much, nowadays most kids are into games and so with the proper tech and fanbase next gens are much sooner. I reckon next gen will be around 2011-2012
