The steering wheel may be in any part of the car so long as your vision isn't obstructed.

If you are unfamiliar with the States driving on the right side of the road, you may be slightly put off with a vehicle with a right side steering wheel. It is equally disturbing driving in Britian with a yank's vehicle. Which ever roads you do decide to drive upon, and where ever you do end up driving either side steering wheel is legal to use in either country. Now, do go about your business in safety.

Why did the Australian Siamese twins go to the USA? The one on the left wanted to learn how to drive.
Here in Australia a left-hand drive car can be driven, but must have a notice on back: LEFT HAND DRIVE. I assume a similar law would apply in the US, as many diplomats in Washington, for example, are allowed to import their cars on a temporary basis. It may vary state to state. I'll be interested in the answers you get.

I have seen some but as far as it being illegal I am not sure. I would not think it was illegal since all mail trucks have their steering wheel on the right.

Yep. If you notice, all (or most) "mail trucks" (I don't know what they're called :p) have the steering wheel on the right.

It is legal. Sitting on the right, unprotected left turns are very dangerous.

I don't think so. It should not matter, as long as you drive on the right side of the road. That'd be an interesting question for the underpaid clerks at DMV - watch em scurry!
