I'm a debater in school and impromptu speaker in school. I've gone to city-wide competitions and looking forward to my first national one...
So you've gotta trust me here.
In selecting a topic you need to think of a pressing matter.
Like what do people care about?
Hmmm... Let's take MySpace for example.
Next step: decide which side you're on, anti-MySpace, or Pro-MySpace.
First thing you need to do in doing a speech is to define your terms. What is MySpace?
Then if you decide that it's actually beneficial to society, define what beneficial is.
Then you need to build on your "arguments". I know this sounds very debate-ish, but it works either way.
You can say that MySpace is beneficial because it helps socially, emotionally, blah blah.
Then tell why.
Remember that your objective here is to persuade people to think that MySpace is actually a good thing rather than bad.
Also, you can try imagining what "arguments" an anti-MySpace side could come up with and try to destroy them.
For example: Anti-MySpace: MySpace is virtual, there are dangers to it, people can pretend to be other people blah blah....
You can attack this argument by saying that it's in the user's discretion on whether or not they would succumb to this harm, blah blah.
After your speech, you wrap it up by telling your conclusion.
Go back to your arguments and restate them, but in a summarized way.
It also helps to provide really concrete and specific examples as much as possible in making speeches.
And if you can, you can just make an outline of what you have to say, and say them impromptu. It looks boring if you read from a piece of paper. this needs practice, make sure you practice if you attempt this.
And people love expressions, and passion.
Just give them the impression that you DO know what you're talking about and you're good to go!
Good luck!!!

I am really good at persuasive speeches so heres some pointers and you can ask me for anything else any time:
Find something your pasionate about like something you've heard recently that you could talk about for ever whether you think its stupid or brilliant
Realize that you need a gripping first sentence so that you can people to start listening to you. I wrote this report once it was an oral report and my first sentence was like
"Unlike most kids i wasnt a product or a night gone crazy i was made to save my sister"
So everyone was like Wait what!
And do something you know about so you wont be nervous. I am sure you'll do fine!

Hi Xmusic. I partly agree with Delena - choose a topic you feel passionate about. It will be helpful, in terms of keeping the class interested in your speech, if it is a topic they are interested in too!
Are there any issues being discussed at your school? School uniforms? Campus security? Free expression of religious or political ideas on your clothes? etc.
Start your speech with a Direct Question about your chosen topic (this is where I disagree with Delena) - don't try to be cute, it can backfire.
For example, if your topic is whether or not the school should allow the wearing of clothes that state political ideas, simply start by asking: "Should students be allowed the same 'Free Speech' rights of expression as the rest of the U.S. population? Should we be allowed to express our political opinions on the clothes we wear?
If this is important to your classmates, you will have 'hooked' them - you now have their attention. Now, just list the arguments "for" and "against" (the pros and cons) for free expression via clothing.
Next, go for class participation. Ask for a show of hands; ask who supports unlimited free expression, then ask who oposes it.
Finally, explain your position and why the arguments that support it are stronger than the ones against it.
Best wishes and good luck.

I did mine on being vegetarian.
You could do something like, "Video Game Violence In the Media."
"A constantly made fun of boy shoots up a school, would you consider this violence from the actual video game?"
