All eukaryotes have mitochondria. Plants need mitochondria to carry out oxidative respiration.

I'm not sure of the exact nature of your question. If you mean why are there mitochondria at all, then it's simple. The reason is the same as why non-photosynthetic organisms have mitochondrion: food (energy/ATP). Being able to synthesise foods meaning nothing if you are unable to use it.

However, I never heard of mulitple mitochondria in any organism (not part of a birth defect) so I couldn't tell you that answer.
