I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra GXE. Cylinder #2 is receiving no compression and thus is not firing. To repair would either require quite a bit of labor (timewise) or just plugging in a new engine. These options are not worth it to me and so I will be looking for a new car soon. My question, though, is, how long can I run this car on three cylinders for? Should it last me a few months? Could I take it on a long drive (400 miles) that does not have any hills (it's relatively flat terrain)? Thanks to anyone who has some help or advice!

If you don't mind walking go ahead and try a long trip and drive it a few months. If you take care of your vehicle, it will take care of you, mostly. But if you neglect it it will always bite yer butt.

You can drive it, until the dead cylinder spitting raw fuel down the exhaust to the catalytic converter causes the converter to burn so hot, from the unburned gas that it's temperature reaches over 1300 degrees and ignites the carpet on fire in the interior of your car, then the entire car goes up in flames. An engine sounds much better now, doesn't it?

You can drive it, at your risk, until it goes chug-clunk and leaves you causing a traffic jam in the middle of the street. When an engine is in that condition it isn't reliable to run to the corner store. Then again, you never know. God protects drunks and fools, or so I've been told, and only a fool would try to drive something in that condition 400 miles, regardless of terrain.

i had a corolla 93 with same problem

after the problem, i drove the car for 6000 miles in three months

car shakes and vibrates but drove ok

i will not take risk to go on long trip

and gas consumption almost doubles

so if driving local or short trip

and when i stop driving car it was still drivable

every day and every mile you drive it is putting the engine in a real bad strain so i wouldn't push it to hard, you might get a few weeks maybe more from it, i seen a Toyota go for about 6 months with a dead cylinder in it,yours may last a while also, good luck on it.

Well , your gas mileage will go down, your catalytic converter will become clogged and your 02 sensors will be ruined. Maybe 1-2 months, depends on how much you drive

The engine is terminal. It could go on for a thousand more miles or it could self destruct as I am typing this. Good luck!
