Hey all. Everytime I watch an American sit-com, I can't help but notice that shoes are worn in the house. People just walk right in. I don't think I know a single person here in Saskatchewan that does that... but a couple of my friends from the States say its pretty common practice. Is this a Canadian-American thing? Or am I just reading too deeply into this?

In Australia, Italy and Germany, shoes are not usually removed before entering a house (although of course some people do).

In Fiji, shoes are removed almost everywhere.

They are the only places I have been, so can't say for other places, except that friends from different cultural backgrounds have different attitudes to this.

Here in Australia, among people I know and homes I have visited I would say it is roughly half and half who takes shoes off at the door and who doesn't.

Cheers :-)

When I was growing up, we took our shoes off when we went into the house, but not in winter.
Situations have changed so much in the past few decades, largely due to all the aliens coming in. The further you are from large population centers, the less the change.

In America, some people take their shoes off and some people don't. At my house, the shoes come off. I like to walk around in my socks and have clean floors.

People who are Japanese take off their shoes before they enter their house. I do the same thing but I am Black,Puerto Rican, and Indian. Actually it is a good thing you do. Being outside has so many germs on the ground, people with carpet can bring that stuff on the floor.

Yeah, I'm Canadian and I take my shoes off. I went to LA to see some family, and all of them kept their shoes on and I felt like I had to. It felt so weird keeping them on.

My girlfriend has lived all over the US, and said she had never seen anyone take off their shoes to come into a house until she moved to North Dakota, so maybe it's an upper midwest (ND, Sask) thing.
