You can do a google for photos of 1800's cowboys, the pictures will tell you a lot. Also check for the gold rush era, a lot of photos are online about that, which would be from the mid 1800's.

Lots of material and images, including photographs from the technology's early years.

I use this site a LOT for my research. Nothing like source documentation for true authenticity.
