HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) which is a hard white plastic - at least 1/2" thick with flat head screws counter sunk 1/4" so that the head will not damage boards even after a significant amount of wear.

If you cant find HDPE and you are not making anything fancy, just get any kind of hard laminate at Home Depot. You could get one that looks like wood! Definitely use flathead screws.
