Osteoporous. Your bones are collapsing and shrinking

2007-11-04 15:45:48 · answer #1 · answered by Experto Credo 7 · 0 0

Firstly check your posture. Are you standing tall, or are you slumped over? Look in a mirror side on, and see if there is any bend in the spine, beyond what you remember. Palates or Yoga are supposed to be helpful at correcting posture. Maybe a chiropractor or physiotherapist, if there's also pain.
There is also the possibility of Osteoporosis, a thinning of the bones, which can result in a reduction of height. Its unusual if your only in your forties, but not impossible.
Another is do you have a history of back problems? Scoliosis, colapsed discs, etc can reduce overall height too.
In all cases see your G.P. to find out for sure, and rule out what its not.

That there is a good chance that you have osteoporosis

Symptoms

Osteoporosis is often called a "silent disease" because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a sudden strain, bump or fall causes a fracture or a vertebra to collapse. Collapsed vertebrae may initially be felt or seen in the form of severe back pain, loss of height, or spinal deformities such as kyphosis or stooped posture.

It could be either of two things: Scoliosis or Osteoporosis.

Do you have a history of Scoliosis? Your spine would be curved causing loss in height.

Or, Osteoporosis is setting in. The bones in your back have broken, causing your spine and height to shorten.

You're a bit young to have that happen though.

I would see your doctor to find out.

I have shrunk 1/2" and I am younger than you. Take more calcium and talk to your dr. about it.
