In my opinion it is fine. We're not stealing from the poor, we're stealing from rich artists or movie companies that will now make 50 million dollars instead of 70 million dollars, boo hoo.

You know, I often ponder this question as I frequently do both. Personally, I feel that downloading Music for free off of the internet is ethical. My rationale is that if I wanted, I could just there and record the radio, which is publicly broad casted, and then have the songs for myself using a perfectly legal fashion. By downloading them off of the internet I'm just saving myself that amount of time. Also, if I had to pay for my music, I doubt that I'd be throwing down $50 or so for concert tickets to bands. I guess that's how I balance things.

In terms of movies, however, no, I don't think that's ethical, even though I do it myself. I just can't find a way to justify not paying a cent to have a film at my disposal. Renting movies and copying them though, I find that fine.

Ethical, yes.

Legal, no.

The fact that the movie of music is not in a form that is produced physically brings to mind what value to give to artistic property once that property has been displayed.

Think about the news and the film on the news. Technically those stories are performances and those performances are displayed with no thought to artistic rights, the exception being sports.

But it does sem hypocritical of an industry that makes the machines to record and download to be complaining that you use the products they used to make the movies and music to make yourself a personal copy of the movie or music.....

Unless it is being offered for free by the copyright holder, no. The people who produce and perform this material do so with the expectation that they're going to get paid for it. If you rip it off for free, you are stealing from them. You are also indirectly hurting all of us, because if performers can't make money, some of them will stop performing, or charge more to those of us who get our entertainment honestly. Radio stations pay licensing fees to broadcast music, so recording it off the air is not the same as taking it from an illegal file sharing site.

The website (websites) you go into will say if it is okay to download. Just like books from libraries over the internet.

By the way, do not download if you are told not to.....a woman was arrested not long ago for doing this. Seems the law is going to start cracking down.

In some countries it is illegal to file share, but fortunately Canada is not one of them. Think of it this way : Every song you download without paying is some artists time that they aren't getting paid for. after all, it is their job and source of income, but then again, music is meant to be put out there to hear, not to be bought. It's your choice but I believe free downloading is much, much better.

to all who think it is ok to do this, would you like it if it was your music/movie and you were being cheated out of royalties by the thousands of dollars? That is what is happening to them.
"do unto others"...and yes, I have donee it and am not doing it anymore and not for some time.
