I have never trusted dipstick heaters. If it's cold enough for you to need engine heating a warm dipstick will only affect a relatively small area. There are magnetic oil pan heaters available that will heat a larger amount of oil and also allow the oil pickup tube at the bottom of the pan to work better in cold temperatures.
Block heaters that heat the coolant either by a freeze plug replacement or an inline circulating pump are your best bet by far. Battery blankets are good for wrapping your battery to prevent weak starting, but should not be attached to your block.
I used a combination of all three during a stint in subzero weather and never had any starting problems at all...

Every piece of equipment has its best and worst uses, a dipstick heater is good for warmer climates such as the summer days when you leave at 3am to go to work, or live in a place that you can shelter your vehicle in the winter like a garage or such. Dipstick heaters wont "cook" the oil as its only 30-120 watts, which is way smaller than he other types. The downside to them is they take FOREVER to heat up all the oil, so you have to plug it in and leave it for hours, Freeze plug block heaters are more for the outdoor housed truck teat never sees a garage, used in the extreme cold, (anything below 40 degrees) and works well. Coolant heaters seem to be the best of both worlds a is does warm the car up faster and warms the whole engine, but it does take awhile because the oil gets warmed up by the coolant warming the block. In my experience this last type of heater is best used for cars, since the engine block is smaller. Block heaters were made with big trucks or tractor trailers in mind and the dip stick was made as a cheap way for ANY vehicle to have a heater or a secondary heater.

i do no longer advise the two. Order a production facility block heater & have the broking in basic terms positioned it in. That way the paintings & area are guranteed. A block heater certainly is going into the element of the block into the coolant low on the element. It emits a radiant warmth that may not totally save the engine heat, despite the fact that this is sufficient to maintain the oil heat sufficient to allow the crank to teach over certainly on very chilly days. A dipstick heater in basic terms does not have the potential to try this and this is remoted to the dip stick section. additionally they have been nicely-known to burn the oil. The magnetic pan warmer may result many electronics interior the automobile. Too volatile I say.

I agree, dipstick heaters only heat whats next to them which is your oil; cooking it so to speak. A block heater is much more prefferable as far as extending the life of your oil. Not to mention the fact you can defrost your widows faster.

i have used those before and do prefer the engine block heaters over the oil heaters,i don't think it cooks the oil but they don't seem to work as good as the block heaters do,i have never seen one cook the oil though, the block heaters are more reliable though, and will last longer also, good luck with it.

The engine block heater is the way to go.It helps the engine start easyer and worm up quicker.
A battery heater would help , as the battery gets colder it looses power to start the engine, at 32 degrees it has somewhere about half it's normal power.

Why would you wanna heat the block? the purpose of the cooling system and oil is transfer as much heat as possible to the air and keep the engine cool
