Why do people think asians are smart? In school like, last week, in English we were playing a game to study for a cultural terms test that we were gonna take like in a couple of weeks and we were all in groups of 4 so I was like "cool, this could be fun" but I didn't really know all the answers to the questions the teacher was asking the class and then this girl in my group was all like "Aren't you suppose to be smart?" And I was sort of offended by that comment. The test was like weeks away so I didn't spend a whole lot of time studying and looking over the C-Terms. I had other homework to do and work. But seriously kids in my 8th grade think that just because we're asians we're smart. It's so annoying! Americans, Blacks, whoever can totally be smart and get good grades if they study or at least pay attention in class!! I mean I have a 4.0 GPA because I study. Plus they also think that asians are only good in academics but I can totally kick their butts in P.E. and sports!

It has nothing to do with being Asian. It's the culture. Asians work hard at most things they do, and they often have parents who push them to be at their best. It's the same way in music. I'm a pianist, and all of the Asian students are normally the best mainly because they've worked hard since they were young. Anybody can be smart if they put their minds to it. But don't take it personally when they say these things. At least they know you're smart, Asian or not. ;)

"It's so annoying! Americans, Blacks, whoever can totally be smart and get good grades IF they study or at least pay attention in class!!"
"The truth is more asians are willing to apply themselves academically than are some other races. Anyone can be smart IF they study, but asians are more likely to work hard and study than any other race. This can be seen since Asians are overrepresented in colleges even without affirmative action while other minorities are under-represented even though they are aided by the admissions process. Also over the past ten years, asians have had the highest sat scores compared to other races."
Although all the above information IS TRUE for most asians, it does not apply for ALL asians. This is the type of information that your class mates might use to generalise ALL asians as being smart.

It is a puzzling stereotype if you really analyze it and I know how you feel. Everyone at school is always saying "How are you so smart?" and make a big deal if they beat me on a test or something. It's not the fact that they beat me thats bothersome because if they deserved to get a higher grade, then that's fine with me, but its the fact that people seem to believe that the top spot is reserved for one Asian person who has some special super power when in reality, we study hard to get the grades that we get and ANYONE, regardless of race, can rise to the top as well. Doing good in school is all about a personal will, determination, and dedication - traits that EVERYONE possesses. Academic CAPABILITY is not exclusive to any one race.

I do, however, know that parents are often a main driving force behind Asians excelling in school. Early on, they instill the values of education in their children, as many immigrant parents see an educational opportunity in America that is not available in their home country and want their sons and daughters to take full advantage of it. They also believe that with the traits I mentioned above, there is no reason not to do well in school.

People don't like this answer because it doesn't feel good. The feel good answer is that it's all in the blood. Believing it is all in the blood allows some people to live off of the other persons achievements and it allows other people to excuse their failure to try to achieve.

It's the cultural perception of Asians. People assume that Asians are one dimensional because they study all the time. To a degree it's true. Many Asian parents stress education for their children. However to impose a blanket generalization on all Asians is unfair.

It's just a stereotype. There are a lot of those flying around.

However, I don't totally agree with you that anyone can be smart if they study. I believe most people can get relatively good grades with a little hard work, but if you're endeavoring to talk about intelligence that is a different thing.

I don't know. I've met some really stupid Asians, some very eloquent Blacks, some very industrious Latinos, and some very multicultural Caucasians. Go figure!
