It isn't that hard, even though you don't have the stripes to go by. When ready, she should also have a well developed ovipositor (egg spot) at the bottom of her abdomen. See the photo of this in this link (on a blue betta so you can see it!): http://www.flippersandfins.net/faq.htm#malefemale

Vertical bars are only one of the ways to identify willingness to breed, and because the ovipositor is often visible even when females are not exposed to males it is better interpreted as a sign that she has reached sexual maturity. When you introduce the pair and the female is in the glass hurricane (or behind a similar barrier) she will indicate her interest through her body language. She may flare a little at him when he flares at her, but she will assume an angled head down position most often when he is displaying near her. Once they have been released together and they are ready to mate (sometimes they can take days to get to this point, just be patient) the female will swim under the bubblenest to inspect it, most often with her fins clamped to minimized damage if the male nips at her. If she approves, and he is also ready they will swim around each other, getting into position, and then the male will flip her over and wrap around her. This process can take hours, but you will know they are finished when the male chases the female from the nest and will no longer permit her to be near it, remove the female at this point and let the male care for the spawn. Good luck.

you may tell whilst she is in a position to reproduce whilst her abdomen seems swollen, you will maximum in all probability be waiting to confirm what sounds like an egg putting from her abdomen (a white ball, a million/2 in a million/2 out) be careful to no longer leave leave her in with the male for too long. a million to 2 hours at a time. you should try this once or twice an afternoon yet i'm warning you she in all probability won't proceed to exist so watch them heavily.
