Gun ownership is to a very large degree a states right to allow or not and as this goes gun ownership is a issue that has to do with a police record and background checks. So as a non citizen you can own a gun by federal law but maybe not in some states. You can only vote if you are a citizen. With a green card which is a residents permit issued by the federal government. So your question is dependent on the state you live in after you have a green card issued to you. many is the United States are tiring to amend the 2nd amendment of the US consitiution to stop owner ship by noncitizens.

Different states have different laws. I live in Alabama which is a gun friendly state. I have bought pistols, rifles, shotgun, and even building my AR. All off course bought from an FFL dealer or did a transfer from an FFL dealer.

YES, I am a greencard holder and I have a CPL issued by my county and state which is applicable on certain states as well.

This can be a long discussion about rights. But, people who have greencards like me followed the laws and process of this country to get one. If you are an "ILLEGAL" alien, then you already have broken the law and trust of this country by entering a country "illegally" and should never own a firearm. Anyhow, during background checks of gun stores which goes through FBI (NICS), your going to be DENIED anyways.

I am married to an american and have a child who is an american. As a father, I have the right to protect my family.

Also, upon purchasing a firearm the background check will be "delayed" most of the time. Due to extensive background check by FBI. Trust me, it happens all the time with me. But, after 3 days or so my gun store calls me that I can go pick up my firearm stating that I am good to go.

I have my firearms to protect not only my family, but the citizens that surrounds me.

No guns have EVER been stolen from law-abiding people, of course. That's a good thing. AND, no law-abiding people have ever lost their temper, or gotten drunk, or forgotten to lock everything up properly. NO child has ever been able to get their hands on any gun owned by a law-abiding owner and shot themselves or another child. No gun-owner has ever been killed during any attempted burglary. And ONLY law-abiding, sane adults are ever allowed to buy guns of any kind. Your delusional world does NOT exist. In FACT, the things above I said never happen DO happen. Law-abiding people lose their temper, get drunk and angry, get stressed and enraged and pushed over the edge. Guns ARE stolen from their original owners, and the people who steal them tend to be criminals. Children DO get to guns that were supposed to be locked up, and DO shoot themselves or others. The way things are now, ANY person can go to a gun show and buy as many rapid-fire weapons, and as much ammo as they can afford. They can then sell or give any of those things to whoever they want. NO ONE is saying that all citizens should be "disarmed" - the people who keep telling you that are liars who have been lying to you. What SANE people say is that we should NOT keep making rapid-fire weaponry and long ammo clips easily available to everyone and anyone. ??????? Uh, yes, even "monsters" have rights. And certainly a person who has been ACCUSED of a crime has rights, especially since many accused people committed no crime at all (yet the government had murdered a LOT of those, completely innocent people). None of the people who oppose murder sympathize with Al Q!ueda and the Taliban. Again the people who keep telling you that are liars who are lying to you. A person who had any brain would REALIZE they had been continually lied to, and would stop mindlessly believing every lie proven liars told them. Explain to me why YOU think it's a GOOD thing that anyone can buy weapons and ammo that enable them to murder dozens of people in a few seconds? Why do you think we should have MORE mass murders?

Anyone can buy a firearm in the U.S. if you know the right well wrong people LOL Is it legal for a non citizen to own one I sure as hell hope not since our constitution gives us those right and you don't know them. Not to be mean but what do you need a gun for anyway. You are coming here to better your life right? A gun just adds more trouble than it is worth and if they legally let you get one then they will probably put you on some list of people to watch and then you will never be free.

In the state of Washington, if you are a permanent residence (green card holder) you can. Providing you can pass the criminal background check. There is also a provision in the law that allows "Aliens" to be able to get a CPL but I don't know the exact terms of the law.

Yes, a permanent resident alien can get a permit in some states that i am aware of.
I was born overseas and i owned guns back in the 80's with my then "green card"
Your attitude towards the card and the "As THEY call it" betrays your lack of loyalty or commitment to this country.
When I lived in the old country people took issue with "extranjeros" that felt avertion to join the nationality of that old country after living there for a few years...
...when i migrated to the US i knew I had to make a decision as far as to where my loyalties were placed, it made no sense to me to be loyal to a country where i did not live any longer and not to be loyal to a country that was willing to embrace me and be loyal to me and my family as it it shower me with oppurtunities to make a decent life... since then my heart has belonged to the USA.

The way you express yourself in the letter makes me wonder if you have reached that place of chosing where your loyalties rest.
I have peace of mind because of it and life is simpler for me and my american born children

What does this have to do with you owning a gun? Defense.

who will you defend with that gun? Me and other Americans or your old paisans?
I spend 4 years in the military defending your right to bear arms in American soil, Is it too much to ask to consider that if you are thinking of owning and using a gun(perhaps against another american) to please chose to join us. You are already half way there or should i say half way "here". we'd love to have you and count on you.

Peoples of all nationalities have migrated over many countries in Latin America and once they settle there they become loyal citizens of those countries, down ther there is no such thing as a Hyphenated nationality: Italian-American, Japanese -American, etc. There is only one nationality down there: Peruvian, Argentinian, Bolivian, Chilean. They are one solid country that fight stupid wars with other solid countries over stupid stuff... well i guess it matters to THEM ...AM OFF THE SOAP BOX
be well and safe

geez people... a resident has ALL the rights that a citizen has. ALL of them if you can own a gun, so can a resident.

The only thing a resident can't do is vote or hold a political office.

As far as I know, and I have purchased in two different states, an FBI background check is required. So, I would guess not.

Good question

You are illegal regardless of the green card. You have no citizenship, so you have no rights under the U.S. constitution. This addresses citizens, and only citizens have the right to bear arms. You do not and would be in violation of law in all 50 states . Why do you need a gun?? Sounds more like trouble than sport. I'd re-think your priorities and put the gun on the shelf for now, muchachos!!
