The CEO of BET is a black woman. BET was created by African-Americans. I've always thought black people were portrayed as gangsta rappers and thugs by the media, but I had no idea African-Americans had a problem with Black Entertainment Television too, because I never watch BET. Can you believe this? Here is a link to the article. http://www.blacktalentnews.com/artman/publish/article_1447.shtml

I first learned about this at the Drudge Report. Apparently, many black people don't like MVT or Viacom either. I can't stand MTV. I got sick of MTV when they started showing those Marilyn Manson videos. I haven't watched MTV in years. It was great during the 1980's, but it stunk during the 1990's.

Regardless of the figureheads supposedly representing BET, BET is not indeed black entertainment television. BET is black exploitation for the benefit of rebellious suburban teenagers television.

The main audiece of BET is not the average black person as it would have you believe.

BET was originally black-owned, and it used to have quality family programming. But 10 years ago BET was sold to (white-owned) Viacom, which also owns MTV. Ever since BET was sold, the programming has been embarrassingly horrible, with no redeeming quality whatsoever. The black female CEO is just a figurehead. All of BET's real corporate decision-makers are white. It is way past time for BET to be taken off the air.

Absolutely! I have a problem with the way Black people are portrayed by Black culture. There are three modern portrayals that I see:

1.) Thugs and drug addicts
2.) Really rich athletes (The Game, anyone?) or, with a lot of money but never giving back to the Black community (Girlfriends)
3.) The Tyler Perry family type (And his name is everywhere...)

There's never just a Black family. All of them are just stereotypes. Even the good portrayals.

However, I will say this: white role models are catching up in their negative representations. Britney Spears? Lindsay Lohan? That Hilton girl? The gap may be closing in that respect...

same with MTV. did you know MTV's CEO is a black lady as well.

some would say that these black CEOs are exploiters, traders of their own kind, living life in the eyes of a white person and not of a black person/her own eyes.

but i think realistically it has more to do with profits and what sells, especially in this capitalistic world that we live in.
