I think the Leafs are to the NHL what the Lions have been to the NFL. Except the Lions are finally doing something with the great draft picks they've had.
The leafs need to really suck it up for a few seasons, pick up some good young players, then they can pull a Penguins (Crosby, Malkin) and start winning.

I guess that all depends on what you are using as a compairison to determine close.
For example, the Earth, being part of the Milky Way galaxy, is also a part of the so called Local Group, along with Andromeda and several other galaxies. We are on a collision course with the Virgo Cluster at the astonishing rate of 603 km/sec. At this rate we will cover the 45,000,000 light year distance in a little under 2,241,000,000 years, according to my calculations. Using this as a compairison, I'd say the Leafs are right there, very close.

no way will it happen in the near future, because they dont draft very well and are too old of a team that if they do make the playoffs which they wont I cant see them lasting throughout the long second season. Sundin should be traded and they need to start rebuilding.

If by soon you mean "In the next five years", then it's possible. I think we're only one stud scorer and a real goalie (one that could actually shut down my 6-year-old nephew, or my grandma) away from being real contenders.
Of course, so are a dozen other teams... who knows?

Define "soon". Technically, they are already "close" to the Cup since it sits nearby in the Hall of Fame .

Close sucks worse than finishing last. Close Hurts.
Not with this team. Ottawa and Detroit look like they will be in the finals.
