Must it be one or the other?
Banding together is the best way to accomplish things. We do it pragmatically, because it is effective!
There is also a part of us all that recognizes we're all stuck in this "life boat" earth together, so we need to row in the same direction.
There is also a part of us all that recognizes we're social creatures, and it feels better when we are connected to others.
BUT on the other hand, in the end every person is an island unto himself.
When we feel pain, or joy, WE feel it alone. When we dispare, we tend to close off from others.
Although we may agree to the rule of democracy, we will also think for ourselves!
One in the right is a majority!!!
We tend to honour "yes" men as patriots; but perhaps it is also patriotic to disagree, for a very good reason!!!

That begs the question of what is natural. I would say that we band together out of necessity, and have for so many thousands of years that we've evolved to the point where it has become natural, and that we are inclined to band together whether it's advantageous or not. You see this in how we form social groups, and how there are so few true hermits in society. I've heard this is why Starbucks is so succesful, it's partly because people have such a strong desire to be affiliated, to be part of the club, that they are drawn to the specified language used when ordering. There's no real "necessity" here, but we still do it anyway.

I do not believe that we have natural desire to want to stand together as our sexes are the main reason and the barrier of such idea... but the compliments on it is the desire have the unity of our being through procreations.
Thereby of the explanation I have above, points out that we are not an(t)i-social creature... we just want to be as the way we are born or third world would take over and it would be the end of humanity.

I believe we have a natural desire to want to stand together and are basically ani-social creatures who band together only out of necessity.

In my corner of the world (U.S) most people I have observed are inwardly focused. In other words self centered. I think that these people band together out of necessity for their own benefit. Not all, these are broad generalizations. I have also traveled to other parts of the world. It seems more pronounced here then some places, but it's the same the world over. Our own ego takes precedence. We are social creatures when we are comfortable.

I'd say that in the U.S. we have certainly become a dog eat dog society. We do in fact stick together in 'cliques' which I think is a bad thing. We are also grouped together by powers unknown to us that divides us by race, religion, political stances....and so on. Most people don't know the concept of 'divide and conquer'. It is used against us all everyday. That said, I do believe in the positive power of Informed People and altruism for the whole. We all have different life goal that are often superficial, when we pass away as individuals its hard to say there was progress for the whole.

Humans are by nature social creatures. We like to talk to one another, we enjoy the presence of others around us and psychological health requires physical presence and touch from other humans.
Very few people are really anti social.

since you asked this Question I called a couple of people and ask them this question, they agreed they had rather stand together and I also feel very strongly about this and it is also the American way and the Christan way, but, have you not noticed how the Gov, has implemented laws and rules etc, to try and make every one suspicious of one another? they don't want people to stand together as it is a threat against them, if no one can trust anyone else how can any of us get organized to make a stand against our gov, that is another reason they have continually passed laws against Christianity and their teachings etc, in many ways Christan's are the only ones who are even partially organized in this country.some ex military groups have loose knit organizations but, mostly brain washed as much as the general public,

We love other people and sometimes it gets us into trouble we want desperately to belong to this group. Usually ones our age or our nation or our religion. We band together in family groups and social groups and even ones in the same employment. Nurses have more in common with other nurses. Or making clothes or designing fabric.
