The good guy "Bogart" doesn;t get the girl in the end; he lets her go, doing the decent and noble thing )rather anti-Hollywood, if you think about it
It is a film of circles, as everyone revolves around everyone else

This film has a terrific plot and some of the most memorable quotes in history.
Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) is caught in the middle of two wars; first, fighting for the love of a woman and second, WWII. He runs a night club (Casablanca, Morocco) which caters to all sorts of people, so he claims neutrality. In reality he is politically indifferent but has committed some rather anti-Nazi acts. Espionage, love triangles, that night club piano music, a bit of comedy, and drama leave most everyone satisfied with the movie. The political and romantic twists make the film a must see. If you don't you will regret it, "maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
I hope that was the answer you were looking for.

I think what makes Casablanca a classic is simple, great story telling. The central character is a man who professes loyalty to no one but himself, but who in the end commits an act of tremendous nobility - giving up a chance to flee to safety with the love of his life, for a cause he perceives as more important than his own life. If there's a deeper meaning in this, it's probably that Bogart's sacrifice served as a metaphor for the collective sacrifice of all the people who fought to preserve freedom in the Second World War.
Besides the heartbreaking nobility of it, you also have an exotic locale, colorful characters, desperate times, dark intrigues, filmed and lit in a moody, shadowy style that perfectly fits the story. The writing is first rate, and the actors do a great job with it. Consider Rick's speech to Ilsa before she gets on the plane, or the scene after that, when the police captain, who up to this point has been collaborating with the Nazis, says "Major Strasser has been shot. Round up the usual suspects," while Rick stands there with a smoking gun in his pocket and a stunned expression on his face.

Most of you are utterly RETARDED. The importance of this film was in the time it was MADE. Check the date of the release and compare that to what was ACTUALLY happening in the world! The French were defeated, the Nazis were gassing Jews and out to burn the entire world up under their heals and this movie comes out and lifts the spirits of the French resistance! Not only that do you have any idea what Casablanca means? It means WHITE HOUSE. Follow the actions of Rick with those of FDR and you ll see a striking similarity.

Rick is one of the 1st times a leading man was an anti-hero though he certainly shows he still could do the "right thing". He can go back to being his old self occasionally doing a little good, and we all know that Germany will still lose the war. Pretty unusual stuff for Hollywood.
But you are right. If we didn't know it was a great classic, would we still be watching now?Don't believe the hype on any "classic". Watch for yourself and decide(personally, I think African Queen doesn't hold up either).

Bogart, Did not get the girl, but saved her because he loved her. It showed also that not all of those in the "Evil" government are evil. It was Not Just Another Movie, It was a Great movie... Even the Marx Brother had fun with it and it was funny " A Night In Casablanca" try that one on.

I think it's considered a classic because after 65 years it's still very entertaining, hasn't dated at all, the principals are very believable and the secondary characters are very interesting and give the movie a lot of flavor.
