Heck no. I made knives for years before I hurt my back. it doesn't make you weird, and whoever said it did is probably either incredibly boring or just a complete loser who can't stand someone else being interesting.

I do historical re-enactment. A lot of the guys make their own knives. I don't think they're weird, but I guess it depends who you hang out with.

You could be developing your career. Many handmade knife makers saw a knife they admired and began making their own knives. Many handmade knives are extremely popular and people can wait up to 3 years for a knife order!
