About a year ago there was a range of maps launched specifically for women which highlighted landmarks, pubs shops etc because that is the way women see things.
If you ask for directions a man will tell you to go about 2 miles then take a left and then the third right, the woman will tell you to go down until you see the post office then turn left and when you get to the florist take a right.
It's simply down to the different ways that the sexes process information. Maps were designed for men by men.

I never much fit into the girlie catagory, that's probably the big problem with my life, now that you got me thinking about it, I mean you'd never think it on looks alone., but i hate shopping and malls. Don't have problems reading maps either. So i'm not one for the girlie questions i quess. I was a mechanic for years, then i went on the road, ran my own business repairing gas pumps, loved driving and traveling had a huge area to cover.

women individuals can examine maps. There are women individuals who're map makers, geographers and geologists, all could desire to have the skill to examine a map. Allen Pease is a pop psychologist like John gray Mars Venus. Please don t get brainwashed via this stupidity, it s hogwash.

It's hogwash and women have keen special reasoning. It's an individual thing. my uncle was horrible with maps. Stop being sexist and spreading nonsense.

LOL, that's a mighty big generalisation!
'Women' are not necessarily unable to read maps, just as 'men' are not necessarily incapable of asking for directions.
Both are stereotypes, and rather nasty ones, at that.
I'm the navigator in my family, and am really good at it, whereas my brother gets lost between the kitchen and the dining room!
It's just one of those things, maybe having to do with the way people 'see' and mentally process space and distance, but certainly not gender imperative.
Cheers :-)

You would think by now you would have learned to read the map yourself...or at least remember where you have been. Surely you don't go a new place every time you get in the car.

Men have more 'spatial awareness', this is in a particular part of the brain. I am not spatially aware enough to tell you where that is though! It is not the rule and it means they are deficient in something else, that women excell in.
Good luck and dont rely on people for things that they are not really good at, its only fair. Because if you complain about it when you already know they are useless at said function, you are not being fair.

I have ben with several women and I dont question their ability to read maps, however, I do wonder why they give up so fast and ask for directions. If I get lost, I will roam around and try to figure out a route on my own.

Since you want to generalize, let me ask you this
WHY CAN'T MEN STOP TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS??? Seriously, what is it with men and asking for directions? They will drive around in circles endlessly until a woman forces the guy to stop and asks for directions herself. I mean is it really that hard to ask someone to help you out? It will probably save you a lot of time, gas, and mileage if you stop to ask people for directions. When men get lost they don't admit it and refuse to ask someone for help; then they wonder why their partner blames them for getting lost. Why are men so stubborn and have such sensitive egos?
