I'm a senior and so far my overall GPA is 2.6. My SAT score is 1410 out of 2400 and I haven't taken the ACT or SAT II yet? I wants to be a family doctor, but the way I'm doing I don't think I could be in a school that I really want. Is there any chance a good pre-med school would accept me? How about the UCs? Should i not try?

Hey flame,

I'm currently a sophmore at a California CC and I'm applying to transfer to either UC Berkeley or UCLA for next fall. The CC I go to is great, the classes are challenging, it's only $20 per unit, and every unit I'm taking transfers to UC (except for one remedial math class I had to take to brush up on my math skills since I had been out of school for a time).

From what I understand, most doctors major in some combination of Biology (molecular and cellular), and Chemistry...like a major in Bio and minor in Chem. I'm sure you know about this more than I do.

Anyway, there is a website that will be very useful to you. It is exclusive to California and lists all the transfer requirements between California Universities and California CC's.

For example...you can find the name of your local CC in your area on the drop down menu, then put UCLA as the school you want to go to (or Berkeley, UCSD, Cal State Long Beach, etc), and then choose the major. It will list every class at your local CC that articulates (transfers) to the University for your chosen major.

Here is the website...enjoy!

That's great that you want to be a family doctor. You definitely have to get your studies on track in order to get there, though. It could well be that community college is a good first step for you. Get in, take difficult courses, study hard, make it work... then transfer and get on with it.

First, though, do you think you need to step back and figure out what's going on? A 2.6? And VERY low SAT scores? What's the matter/problem? Is it years of apathy toward school, of not applying yourself? Can you do it? Are you really up to the hard work it'll take to get you there? Do you need extra help, such as tutoring?

JC are not giving up. Often times, the college will have the same professors as UC/CSU's. They are just as hard, only cheaper and some actually help you transfer later on. Just make sure you take course/major related classes which will transfer.

Even if they would, you would be better off showing yourself as well as other you are up to the work. You have not demonstrated that ability yet. A couple of years at a community college would not delay your progress and would allow you to show you can master your subjects.

Flame,

Community college would do u better than a Univ. at this time.
u haven't showed ur self or any grading college that u have what is needed to be a Doc. want is one thing . ability and desire are what seem to be missing.
suggest u go to careere counseling and be ture to u .
Doc school is cut throat no mercy no surrender - do u have that desire?
