hmmm.. on a serious note, are you using a mouse instead of the finger mouse thingy on the actual computer? If so, you may have not deactivated the finger thing and your palms may be activating it. good luck.....or kick those little bugs out

It could be a number of things. I think you may have solved the riddle yourself, when you said you have an older Dell Laptop. Unfortunately these things aren't really made to last but to get us hooked into purchasing a new one.

Anyway, you could try to go into your cursor options and slow it down a bit. Sometimes when the cursor is set too fast, it jumps around at any touch. You may even consider checking to see if you have a virus. This can also cause your computer to act on its own. Lastly, try deleting unwanted files and documents off your computer. If your memory is low, your commands won't be recognized because the computer is working too hard to read through all the used memory.

If you are using the keypad, it's time to call in for repair. Something is definitely wrong with the keypad.

If you are using a ball mouse, it's time to do some cleaning. Twist the base of the mouse, clean the ball as well as the few rotating bars inside the mouse.

If you are using an optical mouse, it's time to get a new one. Your current mouse is breaking down.

When you are using mouse, there is a possibilty you might accidentally "brushed" over the keypad and produce unncecessary movements or even mouse click (tap). So disable the keypad if you are using mouse.

A common problem is a dirty mouse. You can open the bottom of the mouse by twisting the cover, and the ball will fall out. Check the pivots and gizmos, they may have crud on them. Clean off with a small brush or toothpick and some nail polish remover.

I have an old IBM Thinkpad that does the same thing. The cursor pad is worn out and nothing I can do about it.

This can have several reasons:

1) Someone is controlling your computer remotely
2) Check your touchpad, it could be damaged.
3) Seriously, there could be a ghost in your computer. This has been this problem in some cases.
