It banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.
Ratified (enacted) on January 16, 1919 - - repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.
In the 200 year plus history of the U.S. Constitution, the 18th Amendment remains the only Amendment to ever have been repealed.
American women in particular were behind this law. They were trying to stop the drinking of alcohol which was mostly being done by men. It did not work and instead brought about a marked increase in organized crime since there was money to be made in selling illegal beer and whiskey.
This experience explains why the government does not attempt to make tobacco products illegal for adults even though an estimated 400,000 Americans die each year from tobacco related diseases.

It made alcohol against the law, the 21 amendment ruled out the 18th amendment
