My sister in law is pregnant which brought up the thought of the possibility of having fraternal twins.
Her husbands mother is a twin (though I'm told this is irrelevant). My sister-in-laws mother had twin great uncles, and also her father had uncles that were twins. Neither of her parents were twins and none of her grandparents were twins. Is there a chance that she will have twins? Thanks for satisfying our curiosity.

I have no idea how twins are created or why. However I have seen a document in the past that states a rather odd fact about humans. For every 84 births there is a twin birth. For every 84 Twin births there is a Triplet and so on.

I have heard of a women who had twins whose birthdays were 5 weeks apart. She had to have a c-section for one baby because the doctor felt that baby was in distress.

Having said all that. I know that twins seem to be more and more prevelant these days. I tend to think skipping generations is a myth. A neighbor lady had twins a coupl;e of years ago and no one in her family had twins ever.

Twins do not "skip" a generation. Fraternal twins are caused by the release of two eggs which happens more often as women get closer to menopause. So multiple births are a greater possibility if the mother is older, this is the main thing - the age of the mother. There is no way your ovaries "know" what generation you are in.

It's the same as people saying "my husband is a fraternal twin, will I have twins?" How can your husband or his family have any influence over how many eggs your ovaries release?

As far as family links go, it's a direct daughter - mother- grandmother etc. It's driven by the female line, not the male line, so what happened in your father's family is largely irrelevant. If your mother or your maternal grandmother or your maternal great grandmother had twins, your possibility is increased, but only marginally.

Identical twins are born strictly by chance.

But by far and away most sets of twins are born spontaneously, with no family history at all.

Fraternal twins are the ONLY hereditary twins and ONLY through the maternal side. so her fathers side has nothing to do with it, neither does the husbands side. i'd have to know more about the great uncles to tell you anything about that.

identical twins are always a fluke or freak of nature, no genetics involved.

there is no evidence showing that twins skip a generation, there would be no way to prove this because some people chose not to have kids, etc.

but on the other side, twins can happen as a fluke as well!

Twins only run down the line from females. Her father, and husbands's connection of twins leaves no room for it to have been passed down to her. The only way would be if her maternal grandmother, mother, etc had twins, or if she herself was a twin. As she ages she will increase her chance too....
Btw indentical twins are a fluke when the egg decides to split. On fraternal twins are hereditary! Not identical!

you will on no account be attentive to until eventually they inform you yet i will assert 2 issues. a million. whilst my mom became pregnant with me (i'm a twin) numerous persons theory she became having twins and my total kin became praying for twins and so on. and we've not got any twins in our kin so it became thoroughly random. So perchance you have some wish with that. 2. i do no longer think of having lots of twins has that super of an effect on no remember if or no longer you have ones. it actual relies upon on if different twins on your loved ones are fraternal or no longer. reason being is using the fact same is thoroughly random yet fraternal would impression it. because of the fact there's a gene for some thing called hyper-ovulation which makes a girl placed out lots extra eggs extra oftentimes and in specific situations countless at a time. for this reason making your probabilities of having a fraternal twins larger nicely solid luck with the twins!

It all depends, it is not a definite that she will have twins b/c of the factor they run in the family. My Fiance' is a twin himself and so were a few other immediate family members. However we did not have twins. You may not have to wait on a ultrasound to determine if she is having twins, usually the blood count is double the normal amount which will suggest this. I wish you all good luck and Congrats !!!!

The thought of fraternal twins is said to run in families and skip a generation. Fraternal though is when the lady happens to drop two eggs instead of one and they are both fertilized. Identical twins are just a freak of nature(for lack of a better word) that just happens and the eggs keep splitting.

Okay, here it goes. My dad's mother had twins in 1948, single son in 1949 and another set of twins in 1951. The first set was paternal and the second identical. All of these were boys.

Twins skip a generation. So, when I first was pregnant I had twin boys (identical). My second pregnancy was a single boy. I have not got pregnant again. But, I am assuming they will be twins and maybe paternal. Hope this helps.

There is always a chance. Identical twins are deff genetic. My grandfather was the only singleton out of seven kids and I am the first since to be pregnant with twins. They were identical but I misscarried at eleven weeks.

Edit----------------------------------------------------------------------

OK., I was wrong...sorry to have given you an answer with mis-information. My husband laughed when I told him that I had 2 thumbs down and reminded me that we learned this together when I miscarried. Some how I got this stuck in my brain. Fraternal are hereditary and I guess this means that I have no more of a chance than anyone else of conceiving another set of twins. Please no more thumbs down. I owned up to my mistake but am not deleting it as that feels like cheating.

Identical twins ARE genetic; and twinning does not always skip a generation, however, it is true that twinning is determined by the female line. The male line determines the sex. There are three generations of twins in my family, and the two sets that I know of were identical. My cousins and my children. Unsure if my grandmothers sisters were identical.
